PARC Playwright Profile for October is Gretchen Kelbaugh

September 30, 2019

After reading the memoirs of Gert Harding, Gretchen Kelbaugh, her great-niece, felt inspired to spread the story. First she wrote With All Her Might; the Life of Gertrude Harding, Militant Suffragette, published in three countries. Next she studied screenwriting and wrote Hardie, a screenplay based on Harding. This won the Atlantic Film Festival – CBC Script Development Award, and led to a 2-decade career as a screenwriter, with one national (CBC Producers’ Showcase) and two international awards (Best Screenplay, Trail Dance Film Festival and Best No-Budget Short, Broad Humour Film Festival). Now Kelbaugh wants to bring this exciting story to stages as a feature musical, with help from two talented composers, Theresa Patterson and Debbie Adshade of Saint John.

Gertchen's upcoming libretto on Gert Harding will be developed in a workshop in Saint John in early November with dramaturge Martha Irving with support from PARC and artsnb.
