John is a Fredericton-based playwright. He started writing for theatre after taking a creative writing course.
In 2008, he had his first professional production. “Between Friends is a comedy about change. Situations change, people change, lives change. It’s inevitable. But how others react to change can make for great stories.”
John enjoys writing plays that involve ordinary people who find themselves in not-so-ordinary situations. The idea for Grounded came while sitting in the departure lounge of an airport. “I’m told you should write about what you know. Maybe starting to write late in life has helped me in that respect. There are things I know now that I couldn’t have known when I was in my twenties. Or maybe it just never occurred to me when I was younger, I’m not sure.”
Whatever the reason, he continues to write plays, mostly comedies. And he continues to get new shows produced both in Canada and the United States. “It’s great to do something you love, and ever since that creative writing course in 1999, I’ve loved every minute of it.”
John is a member of the Playwright Atlantic Resource Center and the Playwright’s Guild of Canada.
